Arkansas Suspends Five

Arkansas is having behavior problems, and John Pelphrey has responded by suspending five players, including stars Courtney Fortson and Stefan Welsh. I don't really care to get into the reasons for the suspensions, because this is not a gossip site, and you can get the uncensored story at Deadspin. Anyway, while the suspensions of the five players are all for different lengths of time, Fortson and Welsh (who were both backcourt starters and scored in double-digits per game last season) are both suspended indefinitely. While details of what happened are still hazy, considering what we do know there is a real possibility that one or both of those players will never play for the team again.

If one or both of Fortson and Welsh is done for the year then that kills whatever small chance Arkansas had of making the Tournament this season. But I suppose in some sense this can be a positive for the program, as Pelphrey is proving that he's the boss and that he won't tolerate bad behavior. Considering that even if everything went right this team was still probably only headed for an NIT bid, maybe it's worth it to destroy this season in order to build a better base for the future.

Or at least that's what Arkansas fans will be hoping is the case, because this could be a very long season for them otherwise.
