Morning News: Bucknell Over Penn St, Florida State's Win, And Omaha A Summit Sleeper?

Pat Chambers has shown a lot of energy, but hasn't produced a lot of results in his third season at the helm of Penn State

Not Really A Big Surprise: Bucknell Over Penn State It feels like a ten point win for Bucknell at Penn State is a big result, but I'm not sure it really is. The fact is that Penn State continues to be mired in mediocrity near the bottom of the Big Ten, and there's just no reason to believe that this season is going to be different. This probably says more about Bucknell than anything. After losing Mike Muscala, Joe Willman and Bryson Johnson, this was supposed to be a little bit of a rebuilding season for them. But they certainly looked last night like a team ready to contend for another Patriot League title.

Summit League Sleeper? Nebraska-Omaha In two full seasons in Division I, Nebraska-Omaha has mostly been early season cannon fodder. Last season was their first as a full Summit League member and they went a quiet 6-10, and well outside the Top 300 in basically every computer rating. But so far this season? It's hard to ignore some pretty solid results. They won at Northern Illinois, nearly knocked off Iowa, and last night crushed UMKC by 30 (they led by as many as 36 before letting off the pedal late). Let's not overreact here, as North Dakota State should be really strong this season (I have them as a 12 seed in my latest bracket), but we have to (for the first time) take Nebraska-Omaha seriously as a team that could make the NCAA Tournament.

Best Win You're Not Aware Of: Florida State Over Central Florida There weren't any really important games last night, so the pickings are sparse. I do like this double-digit road victory for Florida State, though, in a game that was basically a toss-up in Vegas. There were a lot of question marks around this Florida State team coming into the season. After four straight seasons of absolutely dominant defense, that imposing front court graduated and 2012-13 was a total rebuilding season.

They lost Michael Snaer, but everybody else is back, and their defense definitely looks a lot better than last season. They held a pretty good UCF team to 0.88 PPP here. So Florida State hasn't vaulted themselves back into the NCAA Tournament yet, but they definitely look like they're relevant and worth keeping an eye on.

Having Fun At Kentucky's Expense: To be fair, Kentucky fans set themselves up for this with their absurd 40-0 expectations. Making bets at casinos, making t-shirts, building the hype - all for something that was never going to happen. Kentucky looked fantastic Tuesday night and they are a true National Title contender, but it's extremely unlikely that any team from a major conference will go 40-0 any time in the next decade. So anyway, in honor of 40and0.com, somebody set up 39and1.com, and there's all sorts of other fun to be had on the web. Sorry, Kentucky fans, but this is your fault.

Injury News: Washington Jernard Jerreau Out For Season Losing the 6'10" sophomore is a tough blow for the Huskies. Depth, particularly front court depth, is an issue for Washington. It already felt like the bubble was an uphill battle for Washington even before this injury.
